The journey home begins. After clearing the field this afternoon and the postgame media obligations were taken care of the team straggled out to the parking lot and one final tailgate put on by our wonderful hosts Dave and Kevin. Since we aren't flying out until tomorrrow morning, the guys got the chance to spend some time with their family and friends who made the trek out to Wisconsin. We headed back to the hotel eventually to shower and pack before dinner.
We're scheduled to fly out of Milwaukee at a little after 6 am Monday. So the decision was made to leave Appleton tonight and spend the night in a hotel near the airport instead of leaving Appleton at 1:30 am to make the two-hour trip to Milwaukee. So we packed up and headed out for dinner about 6:15 to go over to Famous Dave's for BBQ. We had yet another good meal, ending of course with ice cream and the singing of happy birthday to pitcher Greg Harbeck.
And with that, our stay in Appleton is complete. We loaded up the bus and headed to Milwaukee about 8:30. It wasn't the ending we were hoping for, but to get to this point in the season and be one of just six teams in the nation still playing is a remarkable feat. Congratulations guys! It was a heck of a year and I'm gonna miss you! Best of luck in your future endeavors.
I also want to give a special thanks to the parents, siblings, friends, alumni and parents of alumni that made the trip to Appleton. Thank you and it was great to see you all. It says alot about a coach and his program to see so many former players and their families come back. Safe travels to everyone and hopefully we'll see you again soon.
Check back tomorrow for links to photo galleries. My apologies for not getting the chance to post them throughout the weekend.
Thanks for listening to my thoughts on the weekend. Happy Memorial Day everyone.

Sunday Game Day
It's another beautiful day here at Fox Cities Stadium, a little warm, it's almost 90 degrees here.
Game time!
Hopkins is the home team, sporting their Columbia Blue Jerseys and pinstripe pants.
End of 1 and Hopkins has a 1-0 lead over Cortland. Sam Wernick touched home for the lone run of the innning.
Whew. That was quite an inning. Cortland put up eights runs in the top half but the Blue Jays get a couple back. End of 2. Cortland-8, JHU-4
End of 3. Both teams get runs in their halves as Cortland leads Hopkins 9-5 now.
The Red Dragon bats are as hot as the weather today. Cortland has 14 hits and leads JHU 13-5 now in the top of the 5th. We need to get something going here!
Top of the 6th. Cortland has opened things up with another 8-run outing in the 5th. Red Dragons lead 21-5.
Hopkins homers from Huisman, Youchak and Swarr in the bottom of the 6th. JHU now down 21-8
Cortland gets two runs back and Hop can't get anything going in the 7th. Blue Jays trail 23-8. End of 7th.
And that's the game folks. Cortland ends Hopkins season in a 23-8 game. Hopkins wraps up one of the best seasons in program history with a school-record 44 wins.

Saturday Game Day
It's a beautiful Saturday here in Wisconsin, very unseasonable weather for the Dairy State. But a beautiful day for baseball here at Fox Cities Stadium.
The team headed out for BP over at Legion Field about 10:40 am this morning before heading over to the stadium. The team got the bats going this morning, hopefully we can keep it up come game time.
When we got to the stadium I headed over to the tailgate to check in with everyone. Saw the usual suspects from yesterday along with some old familiar faces. Among others here for the series are many former Blue Jays including JHU Hall of Famer Craig Brooks and his wife, Kris Standish, Joe Zaccaria, and Greg Gotimer.
2:19 pm.
End of 3 and Hopkins, sporting their sleeveless grays, is down 1-0 after Shenandoah hit a solo shot to center in the bottom
of the 2nd.
2:43 pm.
The Hornets work out of a bases-loaded jam. Middle of 5. Hopkins still trails 1-0.
End of 7. Hornets get another rum in the bottom of the 5th. Blue Jays down 2-0.
End of 8. Hopkins puts up a 7-spot in the top of the inning. With a 3-RBI double off the wall by Jesse Skiorski. Hornets get two back in the bottom half. JHU-7, SU-4
Game!!!! Hopkins wins! Hopkins wins! Sophomore All-American Sam Eagleson goes the distance, sitting the Hornets down in order, 1-2-3 with two Ks. Hopkins downs Shenandoah and eliminates the Hornets, 7-4.
Head coach Bob Babb earns his 900th win this afternoon, becoming just the ninth coach in Division III history to reach the milestone. After the game, Babb deflected talk of the milestone, commenting that it was more important to get the win so that Hopkins stays alive in its hunt for a national title. Let me one of many to congratulate Bob on such a tremendous accomplishment - 900 wins at his alma mater. Let's keep 'em coming coach!
Hopkins will face the loser of the next game, Linfield vs. SUNY Cortland tomorrow at noon in another elimination game.

7:22 pm
End of 8. After holding the 'Berg scoreless in the top of the 8th, Hopkins gets two runs back in the bottom half to tie the game up at 2-2. Wernick scores on a single down the right field line by Chris Huisman. Huisman then comes around on a double by Youchak. JHU-2, HU-2.
7:42 pm.
Game. Heidelberg gets the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th to take a 3-2 lead. Hopkins goes down 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
7:58 pm
Hopkins drops into the loser's bracket and will now face the loser of the Illinois Wesleyan-Shenandoah game tomorrow at 1:15 pm Central Time.
As head coach Bob Babb said in the post-game press conference, in a double elimination tournament, you get a "get out of jail free card". Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, we've used ours already.

Game day!
The team left the hotel about a quarter after 1 today to head over to Legion Field for BP. They then headed over to the stadium, arriving about 2:00, to catch a little of the second game.
At the field checking out the Linfield-UMass Boston game, catching up with Jim Dixon from D3baseball.com, Fran Elia (Cortland SID), and Ryan Coleman (D3sports.com photog). As the team was walking in from BP, Todd (current Hopkins Assistant SID and former Blue Jay third baseman) and I headed out to the tailgate, hosted by Blue Jays Unlimited with the help of our hosts Dave and Kevin.
Saw quite a few familiar faces, including former Blue Jays Pat Steffee and Tony Margve, along with Todd's parents Linda and Bruce. The Emrs drove through the night from New Jersey to be here in time. Rumor has it that several other former Blue Jays will be making an appearance today. Also got some compliments on the blog from Dave Kahn's dad, which was much appreciated! Nice to know that someone is reading along!
It is about 4:00 pm here in Wisconsin, the weather is gorgeous, sunny and very warm. Linfield and UMass-Boston are in the top of the 8th with Linfield carrying a 10-0 lead. Don't think we're going to be getting to that 4:30 start!

Thursday Evening
Hopkins got on the field at Fox Cities Stadium right on time for infield/outfield. The team spent about 50 minutes on the field fielding ground balls, catching pop flies and adjusting to the sun at that time of day. Our practice was scheduled for about the same time as our first game on Friday.
Following practice, we headed back to the hotel to rest up and get cleaned up for the NCAA Banquet. We all met downstairs about 2 hours later, with the team sporting khakis and their Columbia Blue baseball polos.
Bill Jartz, news anchor from WBAY-TV 2 in Green Bay, welcomed everyone and gave a few opening remarks before the Fox Valley Symphony Brass Quintet played the National Anthem. As they have done all season long, the team sang the anthem, adding their usual "home of the Jays" at the end instead of "home of the brave".
Following a video of all the teams on their road to Appleton, there were several awards given out. The Elite 88 Award, the regional coaches of the year, the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove team and the ABCA/Rawlings All-America teams were all announced.
Head coach Bob Babb was named the Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year, while sophomore Sam Eagleson, grad student Brian Youchak and senior Dave Kahn all earned First Team All-America honors. In addition, Youchak was named the ABCA/Rawlings Player of the Year. So overall, it was a good night for the Blue Jays. Other than being referred to as "John Hopkins" in the video.
That concludes day two in Wisconsin. Tomorrow is game day! Hopkins takes on Heidelberg in the third game of the day. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm at Fox Cities Stadium.

Thursday Morning
Had some phone interviews this morning for head coach Bob Babb and senior outfielder Dave Kahn. Got those taken care of before heading out to Fox Cities Stadium around 11:00 am.
At the stadium, the guys spent a good bit of money as the NCAA merchandise was out and available for purchase. Got myself a nice Columbia Blue Johns Hopkins College World Series shirt. After that the team ate a quick lunch, put on by the NCAA. I had the first of what will hopefully be several brats with sauerkraut on this trip.
Also had a chance to talk with Dave, one of our hosts while we're here in Appleton. Dave and Kevin were our hosts when we were out here in 2008 and they did a great job. They became big fans of ours and have kept tabs on us since then. They requested to be our hosts again this year which was great to hear. Several of us at Hopkins got a nice email from Dave and Kevin just minutes after we won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, congratulating us and welcoming us back to Wisconsin.
After lunch, we took some pictures on the field. The seniors and juniors each did a group shot before we took the team picture underneath the scoreboard. The team then headed to Legion Field for batting practice. The weather can't be any nicer right now, 77 degrees, sunny with a slight breeze. We got some rain last night, but I think the forecast is clear for the rest of the tournament.
We spent about 50 minutes over at Legion Field for BP and then headed back to Fox Cities Stadium for infield/outfield. Shenandoah is still on the field right now for infield/outfield, we should be able to get on the field at 3:40.

Off to Appleton
We set off from the Newton White Athletic Center about 7:20 am this morning to catch a 9:20 flight from BWI to Milwaukee. Things went pretty smoothly as we checked in and made it through security in time for everyone to grab a bite to eat before boarding.
Our flight took off on time and was not very full, allowing the team to spread out. The guys had some fun with pitcher Greg Harbeck and outfielder Dave Kahn, as we made our approach into Milwaukee. One of the flight attendants got on the speaker and wished a happy birthday to Greg, a running joke with the team throughout the playoffs. She also congratulated Dave on earning D3baseball.com Player of the Year honors.
As we began our landing into the General Mitchell International Airport, I looked out my window and was surprised to Lake Michigan. That can be a little unnerving as your plane is descending to look out the window and only see water!
Our plane touched down just a few minutes before 10:00 am Central Time. As we de-planed and made our way to baggage claim, we were met with quite a surprise. We were welcomed by the Racing Sausages from Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, along with a marching band and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker. Mr. Walker welcomed us to Wisconsin and wished us luck in the College World Series.
After taking many photos with the Racing Sausages, we made our way down to baggage claim and out to our bus. We headed out for the two hour ride up to Appleton about 10:30, stopping for lunch about half way through the trip.
We finally arrived at our hotel in Appleton, the same one we stayed at in 2008 when we finished as the national runners-up, around 1:15.
There's not much else on the schedule today for the team, just dinner and then meetings. Things will pick up tomorrow with media interviews for coach Babb, team pictures, a bbq, practice and the NCAA banquet.
College World Series
The top-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team is headed to Wisconsin for the 2010 Division III College World Series. Assistant SID Jill Olsen will blog on the team's experience as the Blue Jays seek a national title.
